I have traveled this woman’s life from many roles. I have been a lone traveler since the Sixties, visiting strangers, wandering their towns as teenager, opera singer with a lost voice, young woman, mother, ex-wife, psychologist, grandmother, painter, writer, photographer. I read others’ feelings through eyes, drawn mouths, their shifting feet and arms raised to dance in the dark. I record moments in words and images, linking my poems with their images. Their emotional worlds mirror my history. Embracing sorrow, standing up to the world, we consider how to solve an imminent problem, stand guarded or in imagination with lined faces, private thoughts. Proclaiming joy and stoicism while facing work, and my camera, they confront desire, pride, confusion and fear. Our gazes meet each other from opposite sides of a lens, reflecting on each other.
